New Look
I decided to change the layout of my blog because it was quite busy and hard to read. I hope this will make it easier to read and comment. I just found out that the upstairs floor is clean so I can get into my classroom anytime now. I am anxious to get started and get it ready yet I feel like I haven't had much of a break. Between the two different classes that I am teaching and the class that I am taking, I feel the need to do something I wanted to do. So, that's what I did. I read Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich. What a hoot! I love her series with Stephanie Plum, the bounty hunter. It really was nice to sit back and read something just for pleasure! I guess I can relate to my students who just want to read what THEY want to read. How do you handle reading for your students? Do you have a list or do they get to choose what they want to read?

Hi Kerry! Your blog layout looks great. I teach math so I don't have to assign books to read, but I can tell you that our middle/high school students use AR (Accelerated Reader) and hate being limited to the books that are in our AR quiz database in order to get credit for what they read! It is nice to be able to read what you want to when you want to sometimes!
ReplyDeleteHi Kerry
ReplyDeleteI teach math so my students too do not have required reading. However I did have our school principal order scholastic math, which allows them to read articles and answer question related to math.
They really do not like reading, however I would like to make the reading mandatory this school year if the new school that I am moving to has the scholastic math subscription.
I really do not know about the reading requirement for the other subjects. Sorry I was not much help
Hi kekemcdee! My students have specific novels that they read for year long novel studies, but they also do other reading. I have a gutter mounted under my white board where I display books that are the same genre, or related in some other way, as our current novel study. I also display books related to what is being studied in our content area subjects. We use AR (Accelerated Reader)at my school to encourage reading, and since we have upgraded to using it online the quizzes are available on just about any book they choose. I am enjoying your site!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, ladies. I was not aware that Scholastic had a Math series for students. I'll have to check it out. I like the idea of putting the gutter under the white board for more storage and display. We also use AR and I think it's a great way to encourage reading and give some choice to the students.
